In the floating city of Lumban, where moonlight
shapes the tides and magic is bound by
bloodlines, young Alvin Reyes, a second son of a
minor noble family, finds himself entangled in a
debt he never asked for. His older brother,
Cesar, had borrowed gold from the enigmatic Lady
Maruja, a sorceress who rules the moonlit
ballroom of her estate. When Cesar vanishes
after a failed duel, Alvin is forced to take his
place at the ball, a ritual event where debts
are settled not with coin, but with love.
The ballroom itself is a living mechanism—its
walls shift with the emotions of those inside,
and the music can trap souls in endless waltzes.
To repay the debt, Alvin must dance with Lady
Maruja’s chosen partner: Eliza Delgado, a
sharptongued scholar from a rival house known
for their jealousy. Their rivalry has always
been bitter, sharpened by academic disputes and
whispered rumors about Eliza’s rumored aswang
heritage. Now, she stands before him, her eyes
cold as steel, demanding he dance with her or be
consumed by the ball’s curse.
Rules bite hard here: no one leaves the ball
until their debt is paid, and the music cannot
be stopped. Worse, the ball’s magic draws on the
strongest emotion of the dancer—love, hate, or
fear. If Alvin’s heart falters, he becomes a
ghost trapped in the ballroom forever.
As the night wears on, Alvin and Eliza clash,
their steps erratic, their tempers flaring. But
when the music shifts to a slow, hypnotic tune,
something changes. Eliza’s grip tightens, her
breath shallow, and for the first time, Alvin
sees the fear behind her eyes. She too is bound
by the same debt—her father had once danced with
Lady Maruja and lost his mind.
The final dance begins under a sky streaked with
crimson. The ballroom trembles as the two face
each other, the weight of their pasts pressing
down. In a twist of fate, Alvin breaks the rule
that no one may leave until their debt is fully
repaid. He kisses Eliza—not out of love, but to
sever the magical bond between them. The
ballroom shudders, the music stops, and the
curse lifts.
Lady Maruja, watching from the shadows, smiles
faintly. “Debt paid,” she murmurs, vanishing
into the moonlight. Alvin and Eliza walk out
into the dawn, their rivalry now a shared secret,
their hearts still beating—but this time, they
choose to dance together, not apart.
