The first thing she sees is the ceiling of a
sterile room, white and humming. Her hand
twitches. A device on her wrist pulses green.
She tries to sit, but a shock jolts her back. A
voice says, "No movement. You are classified as
Level 3." She blinks. The word "
Level" echoes in
her mind like a warning.
She is in a clinic in Makati, but the air smells
different—cleaner, colder. Outside, buildings
float above the streets, their bases hidden by
smog. The people below wear gray uniforms, their
faces blank. She notices a scar on her forearm,
a number etched into her skin: 7419. She doesn't
remember how it got there.
A man in a white coat enters. He says, "You’re
Nurse Lila. You work at the Lower Sector
Infirmary. You were found near the transit hub,
unresponsive. Your memory is damaged." She asks
what happened. He says nothing. He leaves. The
door locks behind him.
At night, she sneaks out. The streets are empty,
lit by blue lights. She walks past rows of
identical houses, each with a small garden. A
child watches her from a window. She waves. The
child disappears. She feels watched.
She finds a terminal in an alley. It shows news:
"Floating Cities Expand. Lower Sector Population
Declined by 23%." She types her ID number. The
screen flickers. A message appears: "Access
Denied. You are not registered." She realizes
she has no official status.
She returns to the clinic. A patient lies on a
bed, his body twitching. She touches his arm. A
surge of pain shoots through her. She sees a
vision: a crowd, a riot, a flash of light. She
collapses.
The next day, she is taken to a higherlevel
facility. They call her "Subject 7419."
They say
she was part of an experiment—testing neural
implants for the elite. She was meant to be a
nurse, but the implant failed. She was discarded.
They try to reprogram her. She resists. She
remembers a name: "Mang Tony." A man who once
cared for her. She finds him in a slum, living
in a converted warehouse. He recognizes her.
"You’re alive," he says. "We
thought you were
gone."
He tells her about the resistance. They fight
against the system, using old tech to disrupt
the implants. She joins them. They teach her to
disable the devices, to access forbidden data.
She learns the truth: the floating cities are
built on the bodies of the lower sector, their
labor harvested for energy.
She infiltrates a floating city. She plants a
virus in the central server. The lights flicker.
The city shudders. The people panic. She escapes,
but the virus spreads. The system crashes. The
floating cities descend. The lower sector rises.
She returns to Makati. The streets are filled
with people, shouting, laughing. The implants
stop working. No more levels. No more control.
She looks at her arm. The number is gone. She
smiles. For the first time, she feels free.
